Red Pills started back in February of 2006. I created the blog primarily to express my political opinions. Shortly thereafter I threw my hat into the political arena running as a Libertarian for Utah State Representative. That race took a lot of time and money. Needless to say it was an all uphill learning experience. As my time was spent going around the District knocking on doors, my posts in Red Pills languished.
After the election in November, 2006, I started writing in earnest for Red Pills and have not looked back (ok, until this post). As of this writing there are some 2332 posts and numerous pages, blidgets and widgets. Of the 2332 posts, I have been involved in writing 93 percent of them. That said, I am indebted to Richard Proctor, J. D. Longstreet, Chuck Baldwin, and of course Frank Bell for their contributions to Red Pills (J.D. and Chuck’s articles do not originate in Red Pills). I have used articles from many sources over the past three plus years but my primary sources have been the likes of wnd.com, mises.org, onenewsnow.com, drudgereport.com, huffingtonpost.com, nytimes.com, wsj.com, politico.com, etc. Thank heavens for a free and open Internet!
As I always document and give credit to the authors of any articles or text that I use, I have only been threatened one time with legal action. Apparently the author was new to blogging and after I explained how they benefited with my use of their articles, they were fine with the situation and I have subsequently used their prose in my posts.
I like to include pictures with my posts. As humans are visually oriented, I believe images add at least the proverbial 1,000 words to a post. As there is no way for me to take but a small fraction of those images myself (I do have a full-time job) I rely on others who post images on the Internet. As you may have noticed, at the bottom of each post I always reference the source of the image the first time I use it and if I have ‘photoshopped’ it. Again, only once did the owner of an image contact me demanding that I not use their image. Of course I complied with their wish and just snagged an even better one elsewhere on the Internet. I am indebted to the artists who originate the images I use. Again, thank heaven for a free and open Internet.
Of course, in exchange, I encourage the free and open use (except in book form) of my Red Pills posts by others, requesting only for their recognition of its source.
Since inception, I have borne the costs associated with creating, hosting, and maintaining Red Pills. Initially it was primarily my time and hosting was inexpensive. As Red Pills has become more widely received I have had to move it to faster and increasingly dedicated servers. That means increased costs. Currently I am paying some $89/month for the hosting and the obligatory some $15/yr for the domain name. Of course I hope that Red Pills continues to grow and I intend to grow and maintain it out into the foreseeable future.
To date I have avoided placing ads in Red Pills. Personally, I don’t care for them when reading an article or maneuvering around in a website. Some ads are particularly egregious and distracting. I cannot guarantee that Red Pills will always remain ad free but for now, as long as I can keep our creditors away from the door and keep the family financially sound, I will continue to support Red Pills sans ads.
One of the things I learned running for public office back in 2006 (and again in 2008) is that unless you ask for donations, people, even if they agree and support you, are unlikely to contribute to your efforts. You have to ask them and make it convenient for them to support you. Which of course finally brings us to the purpose of this post.
I have now added a ‘donate’ button at the bottom of subsequent Red Pills posts. Clicking this button takes you to PayPal where you can shake lose some change and help support Red Pills. As I am not sure that people want it publically known that they financially support Red Pills, I will forgo listing those who contribute. Yet, if in fact you desire to be listed and your website referenced, then let me know and I will create a page for that purpose.
There, I have asked for your financial support and have made it easy for you to contribute if so you desire. On the flip side, for those of you who wish Red Pills would just go away, your not contributing will not make that happen. One way or the other, Red Pills is here to stay and to continue to expose and oppose statism, despotism, and other similar forms of isms!
