RPDr. Ron Paul has said during a stump speech, “It is an outrage that waiters, waitresses, and other service-sector employees have to pay taxes on the tips they earn.” He went on to say that it is an unfair tax because the government is taxing people simply for doing a good job.

In fact, as we all know, the Internal Revenue Service Tax Code does require service industry personnel to estimate and pay taxes on their tips.

Walking his talk, Dr. Paul has Introduced House Resolution 3664, the Tax Free Tips Act of 2007, which will exempt tips from federal income and payroll taxes. The issue particularly hits home with many Nevada residents who work in the service and gaming industries and rely on tips to make ends meet.

Say no to taxes on tips! Vote Ron Paul for President!

Why exactly should tips be exempt from taxes, Gary? Just because Ron Paul thinks so? I suppose that Congress doesn’t matter, then? The Internal Revenue Code, Title 26 of the USC, passed by Congress, which was elected by the people, means nothing to Dr Paul. He thinks tips should not be taxed. Well, I think I shouldn’t have to pay taxes either. Maybe you shouldn’t pay them, Gary. If we all stopped paying taxes what a better country we’d have, wouldn’t we! Come to think of it, property taxes shouldn’t be paid, nor sales taxes, or excise taxes. NO TAXES! That’s it! Why didn’t Ron Paul say No Taxes For Anyone! That would get everyone to vote for him instead of just a few Nevada waitpersons.

    Robert,

    Thank you for your comment.

Sure not taxes works for me but not very realistic. Need duties, use fees, etc. at least but our taxes are out of control.

We can argue taxes until the cows come home BUT my main point is that Ron Paul ‘walks his talk’. You don’t want to agree on taxes, that’s fine but you have to give the man his due. His going through the legislative process to change (eliminate) a certain class of taxes which generally are given to those in lower paying service industries. And the idea of taxing good work disencentifies that quality of work. Now I know that the industry would adjust wages based on tips and taxes, at least to a point. But…Ron Paul is putting legislation on the books (not likely to pass) and there is nothing wrong with changing the tax code. God knows no one knows what it all means anyway.

So, I didn’t write it to argue about which taxes to change/eliminate…that’s another post.

    Take care,

    Gary

I live in a service oriented city & as much as I think it sounds good what Ron Paul is saying I can’t vote him for that reason. Many people work in this city in jobs that provide them with tips, teachers have quit their jobs to be cocktail waitresses as the tips alone are more than their salaries. Why should we have to pay off our checks & live like we do while they can all just pay on what may be minimum wage but the tips put some in 6 figures! At one place I know of they make over $100,000 a year in tips alone.

  4. Gary Shumway says:

    Mel,

    Thank you for your comment.
    So I don’t understand. Why don’t you go make $100,000 a year?
OK, don’t want to do a service job like that…but realize that Ron Paul wants to ELIMINATE ALL PERSONAL INCOME TAXES…doing this re: tips is just a first step.
Also realize that salaries would likely be adjusted by the business owners along the line of thinking that, “now that you’re making more money in tips (not paying taxes) then I can cut your salary.”

BTW, IMHO, not voting for Ron Paul based on this one issue is simply your way of justifying doing what you were going to do anyway. Please tell me you don’t decide on who to vote for based on some puny issue such as this that would affect relatively few and would not impact you negatively. What? You don’t want others to make more…because??? simply because they would make more than you? LOL…really.

Sorry, your whole rationale doesn’t make sense.
    VOTE RON PAUL!

I used to work in the service industry by the way. We chose when we became pregnant for me to be a stay at home Mom since both our Mothers had to work to be there for our children. Was a Room Mother many a time, did volunteer work, etc., all the time doing what we had to to raise our children in a loving, warm home. I do not need to justify my choice & truly didn’t use this issue for that. The particular company I spoke of will NOT do that to his employees, Was raise here & know how things are from experience. Sorry also my rationale does not sense to you but it doesn’t have to as Thank God we live in a free country & I can vote for whom I choose.

  6. Gary Shumway says:

    Mel,

You’re right, vote for whom you wish. In the same vein as your ‘free country’ (it isn’t) comment, I too can voice my opinion…besides I’m paying for this blog
    .
If you will re-read your initial comment the tip issue was the only reason you gave for not voting Ron Paul, you gave no other, thus my comment. I am not clairvoyant, don’t get on my case because you failed to elucidate further.

Why did you go into the minutia in your second comment. I’m glad you’re a great Mom. What the hell does that have to do with not taxing personal income? I’m sorry but your response is over my head.

I’m glad the company you spoke of wouldn’t adjust wages due to taxing structure…I contend some would. Thus my comment holds, IMHO.

By your writing and logic, you seem to be a product of the government skool system. Thus I will no longer try to convince you of all the positives regarding Ron Paul. Read Red Pills and search the internet if you’re interested.

    Live long and prosper.

    VOTE RON PAUL!!

I don’t like the discrimination either, but RP has sponsored other bills to get rid of specific taxes.

He would like to abolish the IRS and the income tax for everyone, but since that is not practical because of the mentality of the one posters up above, the next practical action is to sponsor bills that provide tax breaks in different areas.
