The Ron Paul Record: illegal aliens and abuse of the 14th Amendment – 6th in a series

The September 13th CBS news article entitled, “8-Year-Old {Saul Arellano} Leads D.C. Immigration Protest; Boy Whose Mom Was Deported To Mexico, Leads 150 Activists Through Halls Of Congress” was supposed to be one of those heart string pullers. I mean after all, “The boy’s mother, Elvira Arellano, was deported last month after taking refuge in a Chicago church for a year.” Wow, what a bunch of heartless thugs those immigration people and the Arellano’s are so religious and Saul probably has no Dad around. Saul is such a brave young man! Get real.
Facts:
1. Elvira is an illegal alien activist who came across the U.S. border illegally and had her child, Saul, at the U.S. taxpayers expense. Saul is an anchor baby (more on this below.)
2. Elvira came to Washington state illegally in 1997. She was deported to Mexico shortly after, but returned and moved to Illinois in 2000, taking a job cleaning planes at O’Hare International Airport. She was arrested in 2002 at O’Hare {after two years – so much for Homeland Security!} and convicted of working under a false Social Security number. She was to surrender to authorities last August. She sought refuge at the storefront church on Chicago’s West Side Aug. 15, 2006. She had not left the church property until deciding to be driven to Los Angeles {where she participated in pro-illegal alien activities.}
3. Look at the pic above, Saul was obviously put up to “leading 150 activists through the halls of Congress”. Do you think you would get away with that crap? You, as a U.S. citizen? No, but he does and they (the ‘activists’) do.
4. Los Angeles area Catholic priest Father Luis Angel Nieto said he learned of {Elvira} Arellano’s deportation by speaking by phone with Mexican authorities. “Tomorrow we are going to start trying to get her back,” said Angel, who is a supporter of the New Sanctuary Movement, in which a handful of churches across the country have begun to house illegal immigrants.
In summary, Saul is only here because Elvira broke the law and took advantage of U.S. taxpayers. She is an illegal alien who was deported and came back. She was working at an airport! She was convicted of identity theft. She was on the run from her identity theft conviction. She was deposited safely back into Mexico, and she intends, with the help of a Catholic ‘priest’ to break the law again and re-enter the U.S. This sure sounds like someone for whom I should be empathic. She’s a convicted scofflaw, on the run. If you have been the victim of identity theft, it is no laughing matter! Nor is Elvira. She should be incarcerated, not turned lose to re-enter our country!
Now consider Saul. It is estimated that 300,000 anchor babies are born in the US every year. An anchor baby is created when an illegal alien crosses the border, has a baby five minutes later, and that baby is automatically declared a citizen of the U.S. This is an abuse of the 14th Amendment which was ratified in 1868 to protect the civil rights of native-born black Americans. This Amendment was necessary back then to protect those who had recently been freed from slavery and whose rights were being denied. This was most emphatically NOT for the use of illegal aliens, but that is exactly how it is being used by illegal immigration apologists.
The United States is unusual in its offer of citizenship to anyone born on its soil. Only a few European countries still grant automatic citizenship at birth. The United Kingdom and Australia used to have similar policies but changed them due to abuses. Of course the birth of an anchor baby is only the beginning. As the child matures it is entitled to many other taxpayer-funded programs, which also support it’s family. Since most anchor babies are classified as “minorities”, they get legal preference over non-Hispanics. Upon reaching adulthood, the citizen anchor baby is able to import relatives from the home country through America’s nepotistic chain migration system. Having an anchor baby in the US is certainly one way to take advantage of open borders, taxpayer apathy, and politician largess, and vote buying via inaction. Any idea who pays for all this? YOU pay for all this!
Now consider what Rep. Ron Paul on August 9th, 2005 said about illegal immigration:
[...]
The problem of illegal immigration will not be solved easily, but we can start by recognizing that the overwhelming majority of Americans – including immigrants – want immigration reduced, not expanded.
Amnesty for illegal immigrants is not the answer. Millions of people who broke the law by entering, staying, and working in our country illegally should not be rewarded with a visa. Why should lawbreakers obtain a free pass, while those seeking to immigrate legally face years of paperwork and long waits for a visa?
We must end welfare state subsidies for illegal immigrants. Some illegal immigrants – certainly not all – receive housing subsidies, food stamps, free medical care, and other forms of welfare. This alienates taxpayers and breeds suspicion of immigrants, even though the majority of them work very hard. Without a welfare state, we would know that everyone coming to America wanted to work hard and support himself.
Our current welfare system also encourages illegal immigration by discouraging American citizens from taking low-wage jobs. This creates greater demand for illegal foreign labor. Welfare programs and minimum wage laws create an artificial market for labor to do the jobs Americans supposedly won’t do.
Illegal immigrants also place a tremendous strain on social entitlement programs. Under a proposed totalization agreement with Mexico, millions of illegal immigrants will qualify for Social Security and other programs – programs that already threaten financial ruin for America in the coming decades. Adding millions of foreign citizens to the Social Security, Medicare, and disability rolls will only hasten the inevitable day of reckoning.
Economic considerations aside, we must address the cultural aspects of immigration. The vast majority of Americans welcome immigrants who want to come here, work hard, and build a better life. But we rightfully expect immigrants to show a sincere desire to become American citizens, speak English, and assimilate themselves culturally. All federal government business should be conducted in English. More importantly, we should expect immigrants to learn about and respect our political and legal traditions, which are rooted in liberty and constitutionally limited government.
Our most important task is to focus on effectively patrolling our borders. With our virtually unguarded borders, almost any determined individual – including a potential terrorist – can enter the United States. Unfortunately, the federal government seems more intent upon guarding the borders of other nations than our own. We are still patrolling Korea’s border after some 50 years, yet ours are more porous than ever. It is ironic that we criticize Syria for failing to secure its border with Iraq while our own borders, particularly to the south, are no better secured than those of Syria.
We need to allocate far more of our resources, both in terms of money and manpower, to securing our borders and coastlines here at home. This is the most critical task before us, both in terms of immigration problems and the threat of foreign terrorists. Unless and until we secure our borders, illegal immigration and the problems associated with it will only increase.
If we took some of the steps I have outlined here – eliminating the welfare state and securing our borders – we could effectively address the problem of illegal immigration in a manner that would not undermine the freedom of American citizens. Sadly, it appears we are moving toward policies like a national ID that diminish our liberties. Like gun control, these approaches only punish the innocent, as criminals will always find a way around the law.
That is what Rep. Ron Paul’s says about the subject. Now what is he doing about it?
Not surprisingly, Ron Paul is sponsoring H.J.Res. 46. H.J.Res. 46 is entitled, “Proposing an amendment to the Constitution of the United States to deny United States citizenship to inidividuals born in the United States to parents who are neither United States citizens nor persons who owe permanent allegiance to the United States.”
In Rep. Paul’s typical short and to the point style, H.J.Res 46 reads:
JOINT RESOLUTION
Proposing an amendment to the Constitution of the United States to deny United States citizenship to individuals born in the United States to parents who are neither United States citizens nor persons who owe permanent allegiance to the United States.
Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled, That the following article is proposed as an amendment to the Constitution of the United States, which shall be valid to all intents and purposes as part of the Constitution when ratified by the legislatures of three-fourths of the several States within seven years after the date of its submission for ratification:`Article –
`Section 1. Any person born after the date of the ratification of this article to a mother and father, neither of whom is a citizen of the United States nor a person who owes permanent allegiance to the United States, shall not be a citizen of the United States or of any State solely by reason of birth in the United States.
`Section 2. The Congress shall have power to enforce this article by appropriate legislation.’
There you have it. Once again, Dr. Paul walks his talk! We are very fortunate to have him running for the presidency and his being a member of Congress! It is because of news like the CBS article and the thousands of similar incidents that we must support Dr. Paul and H.J.Res. 46!
