Ron Paul places a close third in first Illinois straw poll

Illinois conducted its first Republican straw poll at the state fair in Springfield. According to the hoinews.com report, “You felt the enthusiasm in that room — here it is, it was pouring rain at the time, and people were literally standing in the rain waiting to vote,” said Illinois State Republican Party Chairman Andy McKenna. “This is important because it brings Republicans together,” said Senator Bill Brady.Those voting in the straw poll chose between nine presidential candidates, including Fred Thompson who has yet to announce he is running, and several state constitution issues.
Here are the Illinois final poll results:
1. Mitt Romney 40.35%
2. Fred Thompson 19.96%
3. Ron Paul 18.87%
4. Rudy Giuliani 11.61%
5. John McCain 4.12%
6. Mike Huckabee 3.04%
7. Sam Brownback 1.08%
8. Duncan Hunter .65%
9. Tom Tancredo .33%
For comparison, the Iowa straw poll results last Saturday, went as follows:
1. Mitt Romney, 4516 votes, 31.6%
2. Mike Huckabee, 2587 votes, 18.1%
3. Sam Brownback, 2192 votes, 15.3%
4. Tom Tancredo, 1961 votes, 13.7%
5. Ron Paul, 1305 votes, 9.1%
6. Tommy Thompson, 1,009 votes, 7.3%
7. Fred Thompson, 231 votes, 1.6%
8. Rudy Giuliani, 183 votes, 1.3%
9. Duncan Hunter, 174 votes, 1.2%
10. John McCain, 101 votes, 0.7%
11. John Cox, 41 votes, 0.1%
The story did not mention how many individuals voted in the Illinois straw poll but Dr. Paul doubled his percentage. The Flip-Flopper is still the man to beat!
