I mentioned at the beginning of last week that I am in the process of finding a new host for redpills.org and my other sites. This means that I have not written much because that would entail recreating the backup and going through the process of getting it installed, again, on the new host. I’ve been working with, believe it or not, three new hosts. These are supposed to be the cream of the crop…well, so is my current host but…

Anyway, I’ve had to remove a lot of files I had on the server that wasn’t site related. This is because otherwise the backup would have been too big. So that took awhile. Then I’ve created two total backups (actually three, one didn’t work for whatever reason), and that took a while. Then none of the hosts would give me admin privileges to unzip the backup and install it, so I had to wait for them to do it.

Then of course there were problems. I was able to get on the site before the files/db’s were installed, then I couldn’t (due to password change on install). Then some of the initialization routines had to be edited and all the other stuff we did to finally get me access, again, to cpanel and ftp functions. Now there appears to be a problem with viewing the sites via http unless I change the nameservers, which of course would disable the sites unless all was properly set-up on the new server. Frankly, I am reticent to make that jump w/o further testing.

More specifically:

The first host took my money and then they wanted more money for extras which were part of my current host’s freebie stuff. Then when I tried to order those services, their order form wouldn’t work for me. So after a number of back and forth emails, I basically lost interest in working with them. I’ll have to work on getting my money back when I get everything resolved.

Then the second host brought my sites over, unzipping and installing my total backup, but then I could do nothing, no cpanel, no ftp, no http access, nothing. So I’ve been trying to work with them. We now have the sites, apparently, back in order and I do have some access. I have no http access as I write this.

I started working with the third host yesterday out of frustration with the first two. But again I have to depend on them to unzip my comprehensive backup. So I created a more current one but so far they have not installed it.

I was getting so frustrated, that I looked into hosting my own site. I found this info useful but it discouraged my foray into self-hosting, at least at this point.

So there you are. You are now up to date.

Believe me, I’m going through posting withdrawal, so please bear with me, I’m making the effort to get the sites moved over and current. I hope to minimize the content loss but I may lose your most recent comments (past week). Stay tuned! Getting my sites moved over will happen one way or the other. When that happens, I’ll go back and do past posts which remain current.

Oh yeah, can you believe that the SOB said something to the effect that he had to override the free market in order to save the free market. What an absolute MORON! Oh oh…I’m getting ahead of myself…
